What is Quartz? Quartz is a hard crystalline mineral which is found abundantly all over the Earth in a variety of forms. It is the most common mineral on Earth, making up 12% of the Earth's crust by volume, and is used in a wide variety of applications including jewelry, scientific research, manufacturing, and building. Quartz Countertops are created through a manufacturing process that mixes approximately 95 percent ground natural quartz with 5 percent polymer resins. The result is a super-hard, low-maintenance, natural stone-look countertop available in a dazzling array of colors.
Recommended Care: Quartz can be cleaned easily with a mild detergent, water and a soft cloth or paper towel. Abrasive cleansers or harsh scouring pads and cleansers that contain bleach should not be used with quartz. Engineered stone surfaces do not require polishing to keep them shiny and smooth, but they should be cleaned gently to maintain their distinctive shine. Quartz can be damaged by excessive heat, therefore, trivets or hot pads should be used.
Pros to Quartz Countertops: The Quartz manufacturing process allows for a much wider range of colors than you'll find in other natural stone products. The appearance of the finished engineered stone is rich and luxurious. The finish has a depth that cannot be produced with solid surface materials. Engineered stone has the flaws engineered out. You will not find invisible striations just waiting to crack open some day, as you will find with slab granite. Due to the presence of the resins, quartz counters are less prone to staining. Quartz is non-porous so it resists staining and will not absorb, juice, oil, wine, coffee and other sources of stains in the kitchen. A non-porous surface means its will not harbor bacteria or viruses. You can always be confident you are getting your quartz countertop absolutely clean, and that's a great benefit in both the kitchen and the bathroom.
Cons to Quartz Countertops:There aren't many cons to this engineered stone. The biggest concern for some will be price. Quartz countertops can be slightly higher in price than Granite, depending on color selection of Granite. The look of Quartz countertops is fairly contemporary. That isn't necessarily a weakness since beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, some homeowners will prefer the more natural look of granite or marble. Prolonged heat exposure can cause Quartz to crack due to rapid temperature change. To avoid this it is recommended you always use a trivet or hot pad under hot pots and pans in the kitchen and hot hair tools in the bathroom.
Installation:After your cabinets are installed (or support structure), the countertop area will be templated. The fabrication process will take 1-2 weeks from the time the area is templated.When the fabrication process is complete, your quartz countertops will be installed by professional quartz installers.
